Decaffeinated coffee beans are beans that have had their caffeine removed. How do you do that? In three steps. The coffee aroma is retained while the caffeine is released: moistening and steaming, decaffeinating with the help of organic solvents and the last step is drying the beans. The caffeine is almost completely removed, although small amounts of residual caffeine are always retained. As early as 1905 it was possible to dissolve the caffeine while preserving the aroma. It was the merchant Ludwig Roselius from Bremen who succeeded in this feat. The full coffee experience has remained to this day, completely caffeine-free!
