Vitamin D has a special status among vitamins:
on the one hand, our body can produce it independently under the influence of the sun's rays (UV-B rays) on our skin and, on the other hand, it can be absorbed and utilized through food.
However, since sunlight is rather rare in our latitudes in the autumn and winter months, the body's own production is usually not sufficient.
Our food only covers between 10-20% of the daily vitamin D requirement, as only a few foods contain relevant levels. Vitamin D sources are mainly animal foods such as fatty sea fish or cod liver oil.
