Hairballs in cats - a well-known problem
Every owner of a domestic cat has certainly often observed that their animal spends a quarter of its waking time grooming its fur. The cat brushes and cleans its fur with its rough tongue, so that it inevitably swallows large amounts of hair or whole clumps of hair.
The absorbed hair must now pass through the gastrointestinal tract. Normally they are then excreted undigested in the faeces, which at best is without visible problems for a healthy cat. However, they also often lead to irritation – including choking, vomiting of the hair or indigestion.

The formation of hairballs
The ingested hair can form in the stomach together with digested food residues and digestive secretions into solid clumps, the so-called hairballs (trichobezoars).

57% of shorthair and 76% of longhair cats vomit a hairball at least once a year. These trichobezoars can be several centimeters in diameter and cause significant problems in the digestive tract.

Consequences of hairballs
No cat owner likes to see their beloved animal choking out hair or even throwing up entire hairballs. Vomiting also causes discomfort and the loss of important electrolytes in cats. This behavior is triggered by irritation of the stomach due to too much hair being ingested. These can also lead to discomfort in the intestinal area.
